Bishop

Brief info

Pope Francis appointed the third Bishop of the Diocese of Montego Bay - the Very Reverend Father Burchell McPherson, who hails from Hall's Delight, a district near to Mavis Bank on the St Andrew side of the Blue Mountains (East Rural St Andrew).

Reverend Fr Burchell McPherson's ordination was held on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

After completing his early schooling in Hall's Delight, he continued his studies at Trench Town Comprehensive High and St George's College Evening Extension. Bishop McPherson's active association with the Catholic Youth Movement facilitated his joining the Catholic Church, resulting in his baptism at 24 years old, in 1975.

His zeal for ministering to youth and activity in the church saw him accepting the position of Archdiocesan Youth Director, and later Chairman of the Youth Commission Board, a post he still holds today.

The late Archbishop Carter, on the recommendation of then Father Donald Reece, who knew Burchell from travelling together to rural church missions on Sundays, asked him to be the lay administrator of St Pius X Church. Bishop McPherson was trained at St Michael's Theological College in Papine, St Andrew, pursuing his studies for the Diaconate. In 1987, he became a permanent Deacon and was later encouraged to join the Priesthood.

He was ordained to the Priesthood in 1991 and immediately appointed Pastor of St Pius X where he served for a total of 25 years. In addition, he was given charge of the faith community at St Peter Claver Church where he served for six years. In 2008, he became the Pastor of Sts Peter and Paul Church at Matilda's Corner in the Kingston 6 area of St Andrew.
